A garage with lean to gives you covered space on two fronts. The main garage protects your vehicles and valuable equipment, while the lean to extension creates sheltered area along one side for extra storage, a workspace, or weather protection without the cost of a fully enclosed second bay.

Fair Dinkum Builds constructs garages with lean tos using Australian steel throughout. You decide the size of both sections, the roof pitch, door placement, and how open or enclosed you want the lean to side to be. We handle everything from design and council documents through to installation and handover, so you get a build that works for your property and suits your specific needs without having to coordinate multiple trades or suppliers.

Why add a lean to to your new garage build?

Adding a lean to when you're already building a garage makes sense if you need more covered space but don't want to pay for a second fully enclosed bay. The lean to shares the main structure's framework and roof, which keeps the cost down compared to building two separate structures or adding another enclosed garage bay later.

People use lean tos in different ways depending on what they need. Some create a covered workspace for projects that generate dust or noise you don't want inside the main garage. Others use the space to store firewood, outdoor furniture, or equipment that needs protection from rain and sun but doesn't need to be locked away. The concept works similarly to how you might attach a carport to your house for weather protection, except the lean to extends from your garage rather than your home. The lean to can also shelter the side of your house from weather, or give you covered access between your garage and home.

You control how open or enclosed the lean to is. Leave it completely open for maximum airflow and easy access, or add walls on one or more sides for wind protection and security. The lean to offers flexibility without locking you into a fixed layout from day one.

Customise your garage with lean to

Every garage with lean to we build starts as a blank canvas. You choose the profile, colours, door types, roof pitch, and any extras that make the build work for your property and how you'll use the space.

Choose your Profile

Stramit® Corrugated delivers a cost-effective and dependable solution for both roof and wall cladding. This profile uses traditional roofing methods enhanced by contemporary design and engineering, making it lightweight, durable and straightforward to install. If you're building in a high wind region, corrugated remains a popular choice for its proven weather performance.

Stramit Monoclad® offers a balanced combination of water-carrying capacity, wind-load performance, and simple fixing. Its compatible Monolap lap joint system allows for single-plane, long-run roofs, and it's suitable for roof pitches as low as two degrees.

Stramit K-Panel® provides wide-covering wall sheeting that works particularly well for smaller garages. The lower profile allows for smaller flashing, which can help with tighter budgets, while its conventional fastening system makes installation quick and simple.

Stramit Monopanel® creates clean, fresh lines on your garage's exterior. This profile is available in a wide selection of COLORBOND® steel colour options, though it's not available in Queensland, Northern Territory, or Western Australia.

Stramit® C-Clad 280 features traditional lines with concealed fasteners. The low profile lets you use smaller flashing, and it can be installed both horizontally and vertically for design flexibility.

Stramit SharpLine® brings elegance and architectural distinction to your garage through its striking appearance. This architectural wall cladding attaches with direct-fix fasteners and lets your design creativity shine through.

InfinitiLine® gutter provides excellent water-carrying capacity and high-performance overflow protection during heavy rain events. The overflow protection slots are concealed to maintain a smooth, continuous line and reduce the risk of water damage to your garage or its contents. This option is available in NSW and ACT only.

Open or closed-in gables give you design flexibility. The high pitch of gable roofs provides excellent water dispersion, and you can combine gables with eaves and other design options to make your garage stand out. Choose between open or closed gable design depending on your needs and preferences.

Skylights bring natural sunlight into your garage space using fibreglass or polycarbonate sheeting. This reduces the need for artificial lighting during the day and can save on heating or lighting costs. Our polycarbonate skylights are extra strong and made to endure many years of use.

Other gutters offer a wide range of options to create a rainwater solution that suits your garage and property. Various styles and sizes are available to ensure compliance with regional requirements, and the gutters come in a wide variety of COLORBOND® steel colour options.

Windows bring natural light into the garage, reducing the need for artificial lighting during the day. You can add them to walls or roller doors depending on where you need light.

Personal access doors give you entry to the garage without opening the roller doors. This is useful if you're moving between the garage and house regularly, or accessing the space on foot rather than by car.

Insulation reduces heat transfer through the roof and walls, keeping the interior cooler in summer and warmer in winter. This matters if you're spending time working in the garage or storing temperature-sensitive materials. For more detail on how insulation affects different types of steel builds, our guide to sheds with insulation covers the thermal performance benefits across various building types.

Concrete slab provides a solid, level base for your garage with lean to. We can organise this as part of the complete project, so you don't need to coordinate a separate contractor.

Common use cases for lean to garages

People build garages with lean tos for specific reasons, usually because they need two types of covered space that serve different purposes.

Vehicle protection plus outdoor storage: The main garage secures cars or bikes, while the lean to stores items that need weather protection but don't need to be locked away. Think gardening equipment, outdoor furniture during winter, or bulk materials like mulch and potting mix.

Workshop with material storage: If you're running a trade business or doing regular projects at home, the main garage becomes your workshop with tools and benches, while the lean to stores timber, steel offcuts, or materials that would clutter the workspace. The layout works similarly to a workshop shed but with the added benefit of a separate covered zone for raw materials and finished projects.

Covered entertaining area: Some people use the lean to as a sheltered outdoor zone adjacent to the main garage. Add a concrete slab under the lean to and you've got a covered area for barbecues or outdoor seating that stays dry when it rains.

Firewood and equipment shelter: The lean to keeps firewood dry and accessible throughout winter, while protecting lawnmowers, whipper snippers, and other equipment from the elements between uses.

Machinery and vehicle overflow: Rural properties often use the main garage for a primary vehicle or workshop, with the lean to sheltering tractors, ride-on mowers, or agricultural equipment that's too large or dirty for the enclosed space.

The lean to offers flexibility because you can change how you use it over time. What starts as storage space can become a workspace, or vice versa, without needing to modify the structure. This is one reason why sheds with lean tos remain popular across residential, rural, and light commercial applications.

Common sizes for lean to garages

Lean to garages come in whatever dimensions work for your property and what you're storing. That said, certain size combinations are more common because they match standard vehicle dimensions and typical use cases.

6m × 6m garage with 3m lean to: This gives you a double garage for two cars, with a 3-metre wide lean to running along one side. The lean to is wide enough for covered storage or a small workspace without dominating the overall footprint.

9m × 6m garage with 3m lean to: The extra length accommodates longer vehicles like utes or vans, or creates room for a workshop area behind parked cars. The 3-metre lean to provides the same covered space as the smaller option.

12m × 6m garage with 3m or 4m lean to: This size suits rural properties or people running businesses from home. The main garage holds multiple vehicles or functions as a large workshop, while the wider lean to option (4 metres) creates substantial covered storage or work area.

Custom dimensions: If none of the common sizes fit your property or requirements, we'll build to the exact dimensions you need. For a detailed breakdown of standard measurements and how they relate to different uses, our garage dimensions and sizes guide explains how width, length, and clearance heights affect what you can store and how you use the space. Your Fair Dinkum Builds representative will work through what size makes sense based on what you're storing, your property boundaries, and any council restrictions on building size or setback distances.

Where we can build your garage with a lean to

Fair Dinkum Builds operates across Australia through a network of local teams who understand the specific requirements for their region. This includes engineering for your wind region, knowing local council processes, and building to the relevant Australian standards.

We construct garages with lean tos in metro and regional areas, on residential blocks and rural properties. The build process stays the same regardless of location: you work with a local representative who manages everything from the initial design through to final installation.

If you're in a cyclonic zone or high wind region, the engineering and materials get adjusted to meet those conditions. Your local Fair Dinkum Builds team handles this as part of the standard process, so you don't need to research specifications or structural requirements yourself.

Contact us with your property location and we'll connect you with the right team to progress your project.
