Garaports combine an enclosed garage with an attached open carport under one roofline. Store valuable items and lock up vehicles in the garage section, while using the carport side for additional vehicle parking, outdoor equipment, or covered workspace that doesn't need full enclosure.
Fair Dinkum Builds constructs garaports using Australian steel. You decide how to split the space between enclosed garage and open carport, choose the door configuration, and select features that suit your property and specific requirements. We handle everything from design and council approval through to installation and handover, so you get a structure that provides both secure storage and versatile covered space.

Why choose a garaport
A garaport works well when you need secure vehicle storage but also want covered space that stays open for airflow, easy access, or activities that benefit from shelter without full enclosure. The hybrid design costs less than building two separate structures while giving you the functionality of both a garage and carport.
The enclosed garage section protects vehicles and valuables from weather and theft. Park your main car inside, store tools and equipment in secure space, and keep items locked away when you're not home. The open carport side provides covered parking for a second vehicle, boat, trailer, or creates sheltered workspace for outdoor activities, repairs, or projects that need weather protection but benefit from natural ventilation.
The combined structure suits smaller properties where building a double garage plus a separate carport would take up too much space or exceed setback requirements. You get the protection and security of a garage alongside the accessibility and airflow of an open carport, all within a single footprint that's more efficient than two standalone buildings.
Garaports also provide flexibility for changing needs. Use both sections for vehicle parking now, then convert the carport side to a workshop or storage area later by adding walls. The structure adapts without requiring major modifications or additional construction.
Customise your Garaports
Every garaport we build starts with your requirements. You choose the profile, colours, door configuration, roof pitch, and extras that make the structure work for how you'll use both the enclosed and open sections.
Choose your Profile
Stramit® Corrugated provides tried-and-tested roofing and walling enriched by modern technology. This profile offers affordable, easy cladding for any garaport. It's durable, lightweight, and quick to assemble, making it a practical choice for hybrid structures.
Stramit Monoclad® is compatible with the Stramit Monolap joint system, which facilitates long-run, single-pane roofs. Monoclad cladding delivers a balanced mix of water-carrying capacity, wind resistance, and simple assembly.
Stramit K-Panel® covers a broader area than most profiles, making it ideal for smaller garaports. It's simple to install and has a clean, cohesive aesthetic. The profile facilitates smaller flashing, which suits property owners on a budget.
Stramit Monopanel® can be ordered in an extensive range of colours. Give your garaport a clean, sleek, and modern look with this profile. It's not available in Queensland, Northern Territory, or Western Australia.
Stramit® C-Clad 280 features fully concealed fixing and neat lines. Smaller flashing is possible due to its lower profile. It's suitable for either horizontal or vertical use, easy to clean, and simple to install.
Stramit SharpLine® lets crisp, sharp lines add distinction to your garaport. Its visually impactful and architecturally versatile design puts you in charge. It installs vertically and is perfect for adding a feature wall.

Choose your Roller Doors
Taurean Windstrong®
Taurean Windstrong® roller doors give your garaport the highest level of wind protection. The wide-access size is ideal for residential garaports, and the built-in flexible strip prevents leaves and dirt from entering. Choose Windstrong® for garaports in high-wind areas where weather protection matters most.
Taurean NovaTaur®
Taurean NovaTaur® roller doors feature a spring mechanism proven to withstand up to 25,000 uses. The subtle, quiet performance is ideal for garaports in residential areas where you want minimal noise. Its rounded steel doors add both style and security.
Taurean Pr1me roller door
Taurean Pr1me roller doors are general all-round solid performers in all weather conditions. The rounded, reinforced steel doors can be fitted as large as 3,100mm x 5,400mm. The spring system is tested to 25,000 cycles for lifetime reliability.
Choose your Roof Pitch
5 degrees
5 degrees creates a sleek, smooth, modern roofline. It's a great choice for property owners looking for a contemporary look. This pitch is only available on skillion garaports.
11 degrees
11 degrees is the pitch of choice for residential garaports. It can be used on garaports with either gable or skillion roofs, and it cuts a distinctive, classical profile.
15 degrees
15 degrees offers high internal clearance that can fit larger vehicles. It provides excellent water runoff capacity that holds up in any weather. Suitable for either skillion or gable garaports.
22 degrees
22 degrees is the ideal pitch for solar panels. It provides excellent internal clearance for car hoists and other tall items. This strong all-rounder performs well in all weather. Suitable for both skillion and gable roof styles.
30 degrees
30 degrees is the preferred pitch for those who enjoy defined architectural roof shapes. It provides enough internal clearance space for large vehicles or a mezzanine and delivers fantastic performance in heavy rainfall areas. Suitable only for garaports with gable roofs.
45 degrees
45 degrees cuts a sharp, striking visual profile that closely resembles a church roof. It offers strong performance in snowy regions and a look that suits heritage buildings. Only available on gable garaports.
Step skillion
Step skillion brings your garaport to life through ultra-contemporary roof design. It allows ultimate flexibility by giving one side a larger internal clearance area. Step skillions are great for garaports close to boundary height restrictions. You can use a combination of roof pitches between 5 and 22 degrees.
Eave overhangs
Eave overhangs give entry points to your garaport added weather protection. They're ideal for both colder and warmer climates and popular with garaport owners who enjoy a modern look.
Lean-to side walls
Lean-to side walls let you design your garaport in a way that's right for you. Lean-tos provide extra shaded space perfect for BBQs, additional storage, or workstations. You can incorporate any standard roof pitches between 5 and 22 degrees and add them onto both gable and skillion styles.
Choose your Extras
InfinitiLine® gutter provides exceptional overflow protection in heavier than usual rainfall events. The concealed overflow slots help maintain a sleek exterior appearance on your garaport. This premium gutter system reduces the risk of water damage. Available in NSW and ACT only.
Other gutters are designed to comply with local rainfall requirements. Choose the style that's right for your region from our extensive range. Create a rainwater system that captures water for use or directs it away from buildings. All gutters come in a variety of COLORBOND® steel colours and finishes.
Skylights let natural light bring life into the enclosed section of your garaport. Save on energy, lighting, and heating costs during the day. We make skylights from either fibreglass or polycarbonate sheets for maximum durability.
Open or closed gables work with gable roofs to create spacious looks and feel. Add extra decorative panelling to customise your garaport, or use gable infills for a refined yet elegant closed-in look.
Insulation reduces heat transfer through roof and walls of the enclosed garage section, making the interior more comfortable if you're working inside or storing temperature-sensitive items. The carport side remains open, so insulation only affects the enclosed area. For more detail on how insulation affects steel buildings, our guide to sheds with insulation explains thermal performance.
Windows bring natural light into the enclosed garage section, reducing reliance on artificial lighting during the day. Position windows along walls or in the roller door depending on where you need light most. Our guide to sheds with windows explains how window placement affects light quality and ventilation.
Personal access doors give you entry to the enclosed garage without opening the roller door. This saves time if you're moving between garage and house regularly, or accessing tools and equipment on foot.
Concrete slab provides a solid, level base for the entire structure. We can organise this as part of the complete project, so you don't need to coordinate a separate contractor. A properly prepared slab supports vehicle weight across both garage and carport sections.
Awnings or extended eaves on the carport side create additional covered area beyond the main roofline, providing extra weather protection for vehicles or outdoor equipment parked in the open section.
Partial walls on carport side add wind protection or privacy to the open carport area without fully enclosing it. You can add walls on one, two, or three sides depending on how much shelter and security you want whilst maintaining the open character of the carport.
Mezzanine floors in the enclosed garage section create additional storage above without taking up ground floor space. For more detail on mezzanine integration, our page on sheds with mezzanine flooring covers design options and load capacities.

Common use cases for Garaports
People build garaports for specific reasons, usually because they need both secure enclosed storage and accessible covered space without building two separate structures.
Two-vehicle households with different security needs: Families lock the primary vehicle and valuables in the enclosed garage while parking a second car in the open carport. The setup provides security where it's needed most while keeping daily-use vehicles easily accessible.
Workshop with covered parking: Tradies and hobbyists use the enclosed section as a workshop with tools and equipment secured inside, while the carport side parks work vehicles or provides covered space for projects that need weather protection but benefit from ventilation and natural light.
Recreational vehicle storage: People store a daily car in the garage and park a boat, camper trailer, or caravan under the carport. The open side accommodates larger recreational vehicles that don't fit in standard garages, while the enclosed section protects the primary vehicle and stores related gear.
Home business operations: People running businesses from home use the garaport to separate business and personal storage. Park commercial vehicles or store inventory in one section, keep personal vehicles in the other, all under one roof with appropriate security for valuable business equipment.
Outdoor activity base: Property owners who camp, fish, or engage in outdoor activities use the enclosed garage for secure storage of camping gear, fishing equipment, or sports gear, while the carport provides covered workspace for cleaning, maintaining, or preparing equipment between trips.
Rural property vehicle storage: Farm owners use garaports to protect a primary vehicle in the enclosed section while parking tractors, ATVs, or farm equipment under the carport. The hybrid design suits rural properties where you need security for personal vehicles alongside accessible storage for machinery.
Covered entertaining and parking: Some people use the enclosed section for vehicle storage and the carport side as a sheltered outdoor area for entertaining, BBQs, or patios. The covered space protects outdoor activities from weather while maintaining airflow and connection to the yard.
The versatile solution of a garaport means you can adapt how you use each section over time without structural changes. What starts as two parking spaces can evolve into workshop and parking, or storage and entertaining space, as your needs develop.
Common sizes for Garaports
Garaports come in dimensions that suit your property and how you'll split space between enclosed garage and open carport. Certain size combinations are more common because they balance both functions effectively.
6m × 6m (equal split): This size gives you approximately 3 metres of enclosed garage and 3 metres of open carport, suitable for parking two standard vehicles with one under full protection and one under open cover. The compact footprint works well on smaller properties.
9m × 6m (extended depth): The extra length provides room for longer vehicles or creates storage space behind parked vehicles in either section. This configuration suits properties where you need depth for utes, vans, or equipment storage.
8m × 6m or 9m × 6m (custom split): You can divide the width however you want—a wider enclosed section with narrower carport, or vice versa, depending on what you're storing. Some people prefer a 4m garage with 2m carport, others want a 4m carport with 2m enclosed section.
Custom dimensions: If standard sizes don't fit your property or requirements, we'll build to your exact specifications. Your Fair Dinkum Builds representative will work through what size garage and carport sections you need, taking into account property boundaries and any council restrictions. For a detailed breakdown of how garage dimensions work, our garage dimensions and sizes guide explains clearances and layout options.
Where we can build your garaport
