When it comes to planning for retirement, it's not just about slowing down. For many Australians, it's about creating the freedom to enjoy the things they love most. That's exactly what inspired James and Christine to build a custom American Barn style shed that would support both their hobbies and lifestyle for years to come.
From the very beginning, they knew their shed needed to do more than simply provide storage.
"We needed a large shed to store all our work vehicles, plus a workspace for my husband," explains Christine. "I also wanted a large crafting room, and I wanted it to be upstairs."
The result is a stunning two-storey American Barn style shed measuring 4.5 metres wide, 10.5 metres long and 5.3 metres high. Thinking Bigger for the Future
One feature was never up for debate when designing this shed – it had to be a two-storey shed. The couple knew they wanted an upstairs retreat, not only for themselves but for their growing family. As proud grandparents, they wanted a space where the grandchildren could visit, play and create memories together.
When it came time to finalise the design, they enlisted some family advice.
"We got our son involved in the design process. We were umming and ahhing about how big the space should be and he said, 'Make it as big as you possibly can.' We thought that was a good idea, so we did."
With its generous dimensions, four-bay layout and impressive 22-degree roof pitch, the shed provides ample room for storage and workspaces downstairs, while the fully finished upper level delivers the lifestyle space they had always imagined.
Bringing the Vision to Life
Designing their dream shed became one of the most enjoyable parts of the journey.
"We found the design process with Fair Dinkum Builds Northern Rivers really exciting because we were designing something we really wanted."
Using the Fair Dinkum Builds online design app allowed them to explore ideas and visualise their project before construction began. Combined with support from Fair Dinkum Builds team, they felt confident every step of the way.
"As soon as Fair Dinkum Builds started the project management of the shed, everything happened very fast," says Christine.
Because the couple lives on the property, they had front-row seats to the build process.
"We were watching this build go up so quickly. The team listened to us all along."
A Space That's Made for Living
Today, the completed American Barn is much more than a shed.
The downstairs area provides valuable vehicle storage and a dedicated workshop where James can continue enjoying hands-on projects throughout retirement.
Upstairs, the space has been transformed into a bright and inspiring crafting retreat.
"I do a lot of sewing, and the space will also be used to store a lot of memorabilia," says Christine.
But perhaps the most rewarding part is sharing the space with family.
"The grandchildren can come up and do crafting with me."
From morning sewing sessions overlooking the property to afternoons spent creating with the grandchildren, the upstairs area has become a favourite place to spend time.
"I love being in my room upstairs in the morning looking at the view, then bringing the grandchildren up to play because there is so much space."
Building for the Next Chapter
With thoughtful design and enough room to accommodate both work and leisure, this shed has become the perfect space for this couple's next stage of life.
And thanks to a little advice from their son to "make it as big as possible", it's a space they'll continue enjoying for many years to come.
